The 7 Scams Targeting Teens Right Now (and How to Spot Them)
Teens are prime targets for modern fraud. Here are the seven scams hitting them hardest — and the one simple rule that stops nearly all of them.
Scammers love teenagers. They’re online constantly, quick to trust a good deal, and often too embarrassed to ask a parent before acting. That combination is exactly what fraud preys on.
Here are the seven scams we see targeting teens most — and the tells that give them away.
1. The “free game currency” giveaway
A stranger or ad promises free V-Bucks, Robux, or skins if you “verify” your account or complete an offer. The verification step steals the login; the offer steals money. Real games never give currency through a random third-party site.
2. The job that pays too well
“Earn $500/week from your phone.” Then they ask you to buy gift cards, deposit a check, or pay a “starter fee.” No legitimate employer asks you to pay them to start.
3. Crypto “doublers”
“Send 1 coin, get 2 back.” It’s the oldest trick in a new coat. Once you send crypto, it’s gone — there’s no chargeback.
4. Marketplace overpayment
A “buyer” sends more than the price and asks you to refund the difference. The original payment later bounces; your refund was real. Never refund an overpayment.
5. Fake “account locked” texts
A text claiming your bank, Apple ID, or streaming account is locked, with a link to “fix it.” The link is a fake login page. Banks don’t text you links to sign in.
6. The romance / friendship build-up
Someone friendly slides into DMs, builds trust over days or weeks, then suddenly needs money for an emergency. Real friends don’t ask for gift cards.
7. Prize and giveaway scams
“You’ve been selected!” Just pay a small shipping or processing fee. If you have to pay to receive a prize, it isn’t a prize.
The one rule that stops almost all of them

Stop. Check who’s really asking. Never pay a stranger in a hurry.
Urgency is the scammer’s favorite weapon — “act now,” “before it’s gone,” “don’t tell anyone.” The moment you slow down and verify through an official channel, the trap falls apart.
